The
Stained-glass Windows
In Saint Francis of Assisi Church
The
stained-glass windows in Saint Francis of Assisi Church give a pictorial
account of the Holy Gospel. Each of the 33 windows tells its own part of
the story, beginning with The Annunciation at the front of the church
on the western side.
The story continues at the rear
of the church on the eastern side with The Resurrection and concludes
with the image of Christ the King at the front of the church.
In addition, four windows in the
old baptistery (now housing the Franciscan Centre Gift Shop) depict The
Baptism of Jesus, Philip and the Ethiopian, The Baptism of
the Emperor Constantine, and The Baptism of Saint Augustine.
Finally, one window above the organ
loft depicts Saint Cecilia, patron of music.
Along with each image on this page,
we present the Biblical (or other) text to which the window refers. |

The
Resurrection
|

 |
 |
But
at daybreak on the first day of the week they took the spices they had prepared
and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb; but
when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
While they were puzzling over this, behold, two men in dazzling garments
appeared to them. They were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground.
They said to them, Why do you seek the living one among the dead? He
is not here, but he has been raised. Remember what he said to you while he
was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners
and be crucified, and rise on the third day. And they remembered his
words.

The
Empty Tomb
|
|
 |
 |
On
the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the
morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved,
and told them, They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't
know where they put him.
So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both
ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb
first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When
Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths
there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths
but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in,
the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they
did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead. Then
the disciples returned home.

The
Appearance on the Road to Emmaus
|
|
 |
 |
Now
that very day two of them were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem
called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.
And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself
drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing
him.... As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave
the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, Stay
with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over. So he
went in to stay with them.
And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said
the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened
and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said
to each other, Were not our hearts burning (within us) while he spoke
to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?

Confession about Jesus
|
|
 |
 |
He
said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter said
in reply, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
Jesus said to him in reply, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For
flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And
so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give
you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be
bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in
heaven.

Ascension

And
he said to them, Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and
rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness
of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from
Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And (behold) I am sending the
promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed
with power from on high. Then he led them (out) as far as Bethany,
raised his hands, and blessed them.
As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven. They did
him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and they were
continually in the temple praising God.

The
Coming of the Spirit
|
|
 |
 |
When
they entered the city they went to the upper room where they were staying,
Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew,
James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these
devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with some women, and
Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers....
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to
them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different
tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.

Now
there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because
each one heard them speaking in his own language.... Then Peter stood up
with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them, You who
are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you,
and listen to my words....
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter
and the other apostles, What are we to do, my brothers? Peter
(said) to them, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name
of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the
gift of the holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children
and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call.

Cure
of a Crippled Beggar
|
|
 |
 |
Now
Peter and John were going up to the temple area for the three oclock
hour of prayer. And a man crippled from birth was carried and placed at the
gate of the temple called the Beautiful Gate every day to beg
for alms from the people who entered the temple. When he saw Peter and John
about to go into the temple, he asked for alms. But Peter looked intently
at him, as did John, and said, Look at us. He paid attention
to them, expecting to receive something from them.
Peter said, I have neither silver nor gold, but what I do have I give
you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, (rise and) walk. Then
Peter took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet
and ankles grew strong. He leaped up, stood, and walked around, and went
into the temple with them, walking and jumping and praising God. When all
the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the one
who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were
filled with amazement and astonishment at what had happened to him.

Martyrdom
|
|
 |
 |
When
they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him.
But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw
the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and he said,
Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the
right hand of God. But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their
ears, and rushed upon him together. They threw him out of the city, and began
to stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young
man named Saul.
As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, Lord Jesus, receive my
spirit. Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice,
Lord, do not hold this sin against them; and when he said this,
he fell asleep.

Sauls
Conversion
|
|
 |
 |
Now
Saul, still breathing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord,
went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus,
that, if he should find any men or women who belonged to the Way, he might
bring them back to Jerusalem in chains.
On his journey, as he was nearing Damascus, a light from the sky suddenly
flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him,
Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? He said, Who are
you, sir? The reply came, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.
Now get up and go into the city and you will be told what you must do.
The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, for they heard the
voice but could see no one. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened
his eyes he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him
to Damascus. For three days he was unable to see, and he neither ate nor
drank.

The
Martyrdom of Saint Peter and Saint Paul
|
|
 Then
Nero, having summoned Agrippa the propraetor, said to him: It is necessary
that men introducing mischievous religious observances should die. Wherefore
I order them to take iron clubs, and to be killed in the sea-fight.
Agrippa the propraetor said: Most sacred emperor, what thou hast ordered
is not fitting for these men, since Paul seems innocent beside Peter.
Nero said: By what fate, then, shall they die?
Agrippa answered and said: As seems to me, it is just that Pauls head
should be cut off, and that Peter should be raised on a cross as the cause
of the murder.
Nero said: Thou hast most excellently judged.
Then both Peter and Paul were led away from the presence of Nero. And Paul
was beheaded on the Ostesian road. And Peter, having come to the cross, said:
Since my Lord Jesus Christ, who came down from the heaven upon the earth,
was raised upon the cross upright, and He has deigned to call to heaven me,
who am of the earth, my cross ought to be fixed head downmost, so as to direct
my feet towards heaven; for I am not worthy to be crucified like my Lord.
Then, having reversed the cross, they nailed his feet up.

Saint
John the Evangelist and the Miracle of the Boiling Oil
|
|
 In
this time Domitian was Emperor of Rome, which made right great persecutions
unto Christian men, and did do take S. John, and did him to be brought to
Rome and made him to be cast into a vat or a ton full of hot oil in the presence
of the senators, of which he issued out, by the help of God, more pure and
more fair, without feeling of any more heat or chauffing, than he entered
in.
After this that emperor saw that he ceased not to preach the Christian faith,
he sent him into exile unto an isle called Patmos. There was S. John alone,
and was visited of angels and governed; there wrote he by the revelation
of our Lord the Apocalypse, which contained the secrets of holy church and
of the world to come.

If you are close to Italy,
you have Rome, the nearest authority for us also. How fortunate is that church,
upon which the apostles poured their whole teaching together with their blood,
where Peter suffered like his Lord, where Paul was crowned with John [the
Baptist]s death, where the Apostle John, after he had been immersed
in boiling oil without harm, was banished to an island.

Christ
the Judge
|

 When
the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit
upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him.
And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep
from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his
left.
Then the king will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed
by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of
the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave
me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and
you cared for me, in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous
will answer him and say, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed
you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome
you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit
you? And the king will say to them in reply, Amen, I say to you,
whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.
Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you accursed,
into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry
and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger
and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in
prison, and you did not care for me. Then they will answer and say,
Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked
or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs? He will answer
them, Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least
ones, you did not do for me. And these will go off to eternal punishment,
but the righteous to eternal life.

Christ
the King
|
|
 Then
I turned to see whose voice it was that spoke to me, and when I turned, I
saw seven gold lampstands and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son
of man, wearing an ankle-length robe, with a gold sash around his chest.
The hair of his head was as white as white wool or as snow, and his eyes
were like a fiery flame. His feet were like polished brass refined in a furnace,
and his voice was like the sound of rushing water. In his right hand he held
seven stars. A sharp two-edged sword came out of his mouth, and his face
shone like the sun at its brightest.
When I caught sight of him, I fell down at his feet as though dead.
He touched me with his right hand and said, "Do not be afraid. I am the first
and the last, the one who lives. Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever
and ever. I hold the keys to death and the netherworld..... Behold, I stand
at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, (then)
I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me. I will give the
victor the right to sit with me on my throne, as I myself first won the victory
and sit with my Father on his throne.
