The
Stained-glass Windows
In Saint Francis of Assisi Church
The
stained-glass windows in Saint Francis of Assisi Church give a pictorial
account of the Holy Gospel. Each of the 33 windows tells its own part of
the story, beginning with The Annunciation at the front of the church
on the western side.
The story continues at the rear
of the church on the eastern side with The Resurrection and concludes
with the image of Christ the King at the front of the church.
In addition, four windows in the
old baptistery (now housing the Franciscan Centre Gift Shop) depict The
Baptism of Jesus, Philip and the Ethiopian, The Baptism of
the Emperor Constantine, and The Baptism of Saint
Augustine.
Finally, one window above the organ
loft depicts Saint Cecilia, patron of music.
Along with each image on this page,
we present the Biblical text to which the window refers. |

The
Annunciation
|
|
 In
the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee
called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house
of David, and the virgins name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said, Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.
But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting
this might be. Then the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb
and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be
called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of
David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of
his kingdom there will be no end.
But Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I have no relations
with a man? And the angel said to her in reply, The holy Spirit
will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore
the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth,
your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth
month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for
God.
Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to
me according to your word.
Then the angel departed from her.

The
Visitation
|
|
 |
 |
During
those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town
of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Marys greeting, the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and
said, Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of
your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should
come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what
was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled. ... Mary remained
with her about three months and then returned to her home.

The
Nativity
|
|
 |
 |
In
those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should
be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of
Syria. So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went
up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David
that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,
to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave
birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid
him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The
Visit of the Magi
|
|
 |
 |
When
Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold,
magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, Where is the newborn
king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him
homage. ...
And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until
it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed
at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary
his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened
their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The
Presentation in the Temple
|
|
 When
the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses,
they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord....
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous
and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the holy Spirit was upon
him. It had been revealed to him by the holy Spirit that he should not see
death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into
the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the
custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed
God, saying: Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according
to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in
sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory
for your people Israel.
The childs father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child
is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that
will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts
of many hearts may be revealed.

The
Finding of the Boy Jesus in the Temple
|
|
 Each
year his parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, and when he
was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom. After they
had completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind
in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Thinking that he was in the
caravan, they journeyed for a day and looked for him among their relatives
and acquaintances, but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look
for him.
After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the
teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard
him were astounded at his understanding and his answers.
When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him,
Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking
for you with great anxiety.
And he said to them, Why were you looking for me? Did you not know
that I must be in my Fathers house?
But they did not understand what he said to them. He went down with them
and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these
things in her heart.

The
Wedding at Cana
|
|
 On
the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus
was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.
When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have
no wine." (And) Jesus said to her, Woman, how does your concern affect
me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servers, Do
whatever he tells you.
Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings,
each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, Fill the jars
with water. So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, Draw
some out now and take it to the headwaiter. So they took it.
And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing
where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the
headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves good
wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but
you have kept the good wine until now.
Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed
his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

The
Calming of the Storm at Sea
|
|
 |
 |
He
got into a boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a violent storm
came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was
asleep.
They came and woke him, saying, Lord, save us! We are perishing!
He said to them, Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?
Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm.
The men were amazed and said, What sort of man is this, whom even the
winds and the sea obey?

The
Raising of Lazarus
|
|
 Now
a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
Mary was the one who had anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and dried his
feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was ill. So the sisters
sent word to him, saying, Master, the one you love is ill. ...
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for
four days....
But some of them said, Could not the one who opened the eyes of the
blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?
So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay
across it.
Jesus said, Take away the stone.
Martha, the dead mans sister, said to him, Lord, by now there
will be a stench; he has been dead for four days.
Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believe you will
see the glory of God?
So they took away the stone.
And Jesus raised his eyes and said, Father, I thank you for hearing
me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have
said this, that they may believe that you sent me. And when he had
said this, he cried out in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! The
dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was
wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, Untie him and let him go.
Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began
to believe in him.

Lazarus
and the Rich Man
|
|
 There
was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined
sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus,
covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that
fell from the rich mans table. Dogs even used to come and lick his
sores.
When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of
Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he
was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at
his side. And he cried out, Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus
to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering
torment in these flames.
Abraham replied, My child, remember that you received what was good
during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now
he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and
you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might
wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.
He said, Then I beg you, father, send him to my fathers house,
for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to
this place of torment.
But Abraham replied, They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen
to them. He said, Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from
the dead goes to them, they will repent. Then Abraham said, If
they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded
if someone should rise from the dead.

The
Transfiguration
|
|
 |
 |
After
six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a
high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face
shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses
and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus
in reply, Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make
three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While
he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then
from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my beloved Son, with
whom I am well pleased; listen to him.
When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid.
But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Rise, and do not be afraid.
And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus
alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, Do
not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the
dead.

Jesus
and the Children
|
|
 |
 |
People
were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them, and when the
disciples saw this, they rebuked them. Jesus, however, called the children
to himself and said, Let the children come to me and do not prevent
them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you,
whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter
it.
Luke 18:15
Whoever
causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better
for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned
in the depths of the sea.

The
Washing of the Disciples Feet
|
|
 Before
the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this
world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the
end. The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand
him over. So, during supper, fully aware that the Father had put everything
into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, he
rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied
it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash
the disciples feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Master, are you going to wash
my feet? Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing, you
do not understand now, but you will understand later. Peter said to
him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless
I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me. Simon Peter said
to him, Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as
well. Jesus said to him, Whoever has bathed has no need except
to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but
not all. For he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said,
Not all of you are clean.
So when he had washed their feet (and) put his garments back on and reclined
at table again, he said to them, Do you realize what I have done for
you? You call me teacher and master, and rightly
so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed
your feet, you ought to wash one anothers feet. I have given you a
model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. Amen,
amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger
greater than the one who sent him. If you understand this, blessed are you
if you do it. I am not speaking of all of you. I know those whom I have chosen.
But so that the scripture might be fulfilled, The one who ate my food
has raised his heel against me. From now on I am telling you before
it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM. Amen, amen,
I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives
me receives the one who sent me.

The
Last Supper
|
|
 |
 |
While
they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving
it to his disciples said, Take and eat; this is my body. Then
he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from
it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed
on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.
Matthew
26:2628
For
I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus,
on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks,
broke it and said, This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance
of me. In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, This
cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in
remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the
cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.
